BEST GENRES

How many genres do you think there are in the world?

Well, there is a lot and probably more than you guessed. there are nearly 300 mainstream genres. and with all the subgenres combined, the number becomes as big as 6000. if you are interested, there is a website that has a map of all the genres that have existed and I guarantee that it’s worth wasting your time on.

From all of the genres, SU’s favorites were:

1. ROCK

Rock music is a diverse genre of popular music that began as "rock and roll" in the late 1940s and early 1950s in the United States, evolving into a variety of styles in the mid-1960s and beyond, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the mid-1960s, rock musicians began moving the album ahead of the single as the most popular form of recorded music expression and consumption. Their contributions lent the genre a cultural legitimacy in the mainstream and initiated a rock-informed album era in the music industry for the next several decades.

A variety of unique rock music subgenres had formed by the late 1960s classic rock period. These subgenres included hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, southern rock, raga rock, and jazz rock, many of which contributed to the development of psychedelic rock, progressive rock and glam rock.

Rock music took its place in the first place as the most-listened genre of Sabancı University. The results consisted of a variety of umbrella genres such as rock, folk rock, hard rock, progressive rock, soft rock and a lot more…

2. POP

Pop is a popular music genre that emerged in its modern form in the United States and the United Kingdom in the mid-1950s. Pop music embraced rock & roll, as well as the youth-oriented forms it influenced, in the 1950s and 1960s. Pop music became associated with music that was more commercial, transitory, and accessible after the late 1960s.

Pop music has been dominated by the American and (since the mid-1960s) British music industries, whose influence has turned it into an international monoculture. However, most regions and countries have their own version of pop music, sometimes producing localized versions of larger trends and giving them local characteristics

Did you know that pop is the most listened-to genre in the world?

Well, you’ve probably guessed it, but it was also one of the tops listened to genres by the Sabancı University. Umbrella genres consisted: of pop, 90’s Turkish pop, bedroom pop, and synth-pop.

3. ALTERNATIVE

Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock, or just alternative) is a subgenre of rock music that grew in popularity in the 1990s after emerging from the independent music underground in the 1970s. The term "alternative" alludes to the difference between the genre and mainstream or commercial rock or pop music.

Because of the early 2000s popularity of bands like the Strokes and the White Stripes, an inflow of new alternative rock bands influenced by post-punk and new wave found financial success in the early and mid 2000s, spawning the post-punk revival trend.

Alternative music was also one of the most popular genre around the campus. Different types of umbrella genres such as alternative pop, alternative rock and alternative funk were preferred.

4. INDIE

Indie rock is a type of rock music that began in the 1970s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Originally used to identify independent record labels, the phrase came to be connected with the music they created, and was used interchangeably with alternative rock or "guitar pop rock" at first. In the 1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to characterize the style of music produced on punk and post-punk labels, rather than recording firms.

Many independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and create self-published music that can be categorized into diverse genres. The term "indie" is sometimes used to describe a genre (such as indie rock and indie pop), and as a genre term, "indie" may or may not include music that is independently produced. The phrase 'indie' or 'independent music' dates back to the 1920s, when it was first used to describe independent film businesses before being expanded to include independent bands and record producers.

The number of indie music listeners were also significant. Preferred umbrella genres were: indie alternative, indie pop and indie rock.

5. METAL

Heavy metal is a rock music genre that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Heavy metal bands created a thick, monumental sound defined by distortion, extended guitar solos, dramatic beats, and loudness, with origins in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock.

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, three of the genre's most recognized pioneers, were formed in 1968. Despite the fact that they had a large audience, they were frequently mocked by critics. Several American bands adapted heavy metal into more palatable forms during the 1970s: Alice Cooper and Kiss' raw, sleazy sound and shock rock; Aerosmith's blues-rooted rock; and Van Halen's dazzling guitar solos and party rock. Judas Priest aided the genre's progression in the mid-1970s by removing much of its blues influence, while Motörhead contributed a punk rock sensibility and a greater emphasis on speed.
